A conversation with Thierry Vandal


Thierry Vandal was President and CEO of Hydro-Québec, one of the largest producer, transporter and distributor of electricity in North America until May 2015. Mr. Vandal joined Hydro-Québec in 1996 and held various corporate and operational positions before being appointed CEO in 2005. He previously worked in the oil and petrochemical industries, as well as in the transportation and distribution of natural gas.

Mr. Vandal has a Bachelor of Engineering from Polytechnique Montreal (University of Montreal, 1982) and a Master of Business Administration from HEC Montreal (University of Montreal, 1995). The University of Montreal awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2007 in recognition of his significant professional contribution in the energy sector. He received an honorary doctorate from the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) in Lyon, France in 2012.

Mr. Vandal is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Canada BioFuelNet Network. He serves on the boards of directors of HEC Montreal and McGill University, where he also acts as Chairman of the Finance Committee. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Conference Board of Canada.

Mr. Vandal is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and was named Canadian Newsmaker of the Year 2012 in the field of energy by the Canadian Energy Council.
